With a view to assign land for Tata Motors to set up Nano car plant in 2006, the then CPI(M)-led government has grabbed around 1000 acres of land from farmers in Singur. Farmers, then, protested against Buddhadeb Bhattacharya government under the leadership of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, who was the Leader of opposition in Bengal.
Later in 2008, Tata Motors moved their operations from Singur to Gujarat in 2008 following the protests from farmers. Even though Tatas have left, they never gave it up on land and instead continued to for it in Supreme Court
With today’s decision by Supreme Court, Tata Motors will return acquired land back to farmers to put an end for a 10-year long protest. Also, the SC asked farmers to retain money paid by the state government during land acquisition, since they were deprived of their lands all the years.
